Get on your bike this Easter

The Easter holidays are approaching rapidly, and the days are getting longer thanks to the long-awaited arrival of British Summer Time.

If you’re anything like some us here at Larkfleet Homes, you’re probably thinking about getting out and about for a bit of fresh air and exercise.

But what can you do with all the family during the holidays to enjoy the great outdoors, and get the benefit of exercise at the same time, without breaking the bank?

Cycling is one answer. Experts are agreed that there are significant health benefits attached to cycling. And it’s an activity that the whole family can enjoy. Here are just a few of the benefits of cycling:

Well being – There are many ways that physical activity can boost your mood. Adrenalin and endorphins released by exercise combine to make you feel good and getting out on your bike is a great way to explore your area and enjoy the views.

Weight loss – Cycling can burn between 400 and 1,000 calories an hour depending on the amount of effort you put in and your weight. Doing more will burn more and if you eat well and sleep well you should lose weight.

Boosts the immune system – Cycling can help promote healthy lungs and cuts the risk of heart disease and cancer. It’s low-impact so the risk of injury is lower than for running or other high-impact aerobic exercise. The best way to build your cardiovascular fitness on the bike is to ride for at least 150 minutes every week.

For example, you could cycle to work a few days a week, or do a couple of shorter rides during the week with a longer ride at the weekend. You'll soon feel the benefits.

In addition to all the health benefits and the opportunity to have some quality time together as a family, cycling is also kind to the environment. And it needn’t cost the earth. Most of us have a got a few bikes in the shed or hiding in the back of the garage.

Just make sure you check your bikes for safety before you pedal off. Check the tyres, brakes, handlebars and steering. Make sure the chain, gears and pedals are working smoothly. You don’t need to spend a fortune but at the very least make sure you wear a helmet.

Stuck for somewhere to go on your bike? There lots of places to cycle around Rutland and Peterborough. Check out the Green Wheel, which has cycle routes that take in the countryside, back roads and lanes around Peterborough and Stamford and link up with national cycle routes if you want to venture further afield.

Don’t fancy riding on the roads? Explore the off-road cycle routes in country parks like Ferry Meadows in Peterborough or Rutland Water. The beauty of riding in parks is that you're never too far from a cafe for coffee, cake or icecream!
